Please note: To download eBooks or eAudiobooks, you must have a current library card with no overdue items or fines.

 

Downloading eBooks to Nook

 

Step 1

Downloading Adobe Digital Editions

1. On your computer, go to http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

2. Scroll down and download Adobe Digital Editions.

3. When the download is finished, run the program to start the installation process.

4. When the installation is complete, start Adobe Digital Editions.

5. When prompted to authenticate, enter the same username and password that is associated with your Nook. (Your Nook automatically asks for this the first time you start it; it should be the same as your Barnes & Noble account. If you don’t know what it is, check the “Extra Troubleshooting” section for instructions on finding it.)

 

Step 2

Downloading an eBook

1. Plug your Nook into your computer in USB mode using your Nook charger.

2. Go to Scenic Regional Library’s website on your computer (http://www.scenicregional.org/)

3. Click "eBooks and eAudiobooks" on the left-hand side.

4. Log into your library account.

5. Browse eBooks and until you find one you want to check out. Click “Add to Cart” next to Adobe EPUB eBook. (Adobe PDF is OK, but Adobe EPUB eBooks display better on the Nook.)

6. If you’re finished, click “Proceed to Checkout”. If you’re not, click “Continue Browsing” and repeat steps 5 and 6.

7. Select lending period (7 or 14 days—you can return your book early if you want) and click “Confirm Check Out”.

8. Click “Download” below the eBook you want to put on your Nook.

9. Save the eBook and open it when the download is complete. Adobe Digital Editions should open. If it doesn’t, open Adobe Digital Editions, hit CTRL+O, and add the book manually.

10. Click the icon with the three book spines in the upper-left. Your Nook library should appear, including the eBook you just downloaded.

11. Look on the middle-left for a Nook icon. If you don’t see an icon, unplug your Nook, plug it back in, and restart Adobe Digital Editions.Click the eBook you want and drag it to the Nook icon.

12. Unplug your Nook and verify that your book is now in your Nook library.  Your eBook will return itself automatically after the lending period has ended.


Step 3

Returning an eBook Early

1. Plug your Nook into your computer in USB mode using your Nook charger.

2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.

3. Click the Nook icon on the middle-left to view your Nook library.

4. Click the arrow by the title you want to return and select “Return Borrowed Item”.

5. Go to “All Items” in the upper-left.

6. Repeat step 3.

 

Extra Troubleshooting

* If Adobe Digital Editions won’t prompt to authenticate, you may have an existing Adobe Digital Editions folder on your Nook from a previous attempt to install. Delete the folder, open Adobe Digital Editions, unplug your Nook, and then plug it back in.

* If you need to reset your Nook password, you will have to deregister and re-register your device. Before you do this, make sure you are connected to WiFi. This is necessary to re-register. Deregister your Nook by selecting the Settings icon. Select the “Device” menu, then “Unregister your nook”. Your Nook will restart and you will be prompted to enter your username (e-mail address) and password.

* If you need to reset your Adobe ID or Adobe ID password, go to    http://www.adobe.com/. Click “Sign In”. Enter your username and password and then click “My Information”. Under “My Adobe ID” you can enter your new username and/or password.

* If you don’t know your Barnes and Noble  username, turn on your Nook, select “Settings”, then select  “About Your Nook”. Your username is the e-mail address listed.

Downloading eBooks to Kindle

 

Step 1

Registering Your Kindle or Kindle Device

1. On your Kindle, select “Settings”.

2. Select "register" or "deregister" from the Settings screen. If you don't have an Amazon.com account, you will be prompted to create one.

3. When registering your Kindle,   enter your Amazon.com user name and password.

4. Select “OK”.

Step 2
Downloading an eBook Wirelessly

1. Go to Scenic Regional Library’s website on your computer: http://www.scenicregional.org/

2. Click "eBooks and eAudiobooks" on the left-hand side.

3. Log into your library account.

4. Browse eBooks and until you find one you want to check out. Click “Add to Cart” next to Kindle Book.

5. If you’re finished, click “Proceed to Checkout”. If you’re not, click “Continue Browsing” and repeat step 4.

6. Select lending period (7 or 14 days—you can return your book early if you want) and click “Confirm Check Out”.

7. Click “Get for Kindle” below the eBook you want to put on your Kindle or  Kindle device. (Kindle device will   simply be referred to as “Kindle” in this guide.)

8. Amazon.com will launch. Log in if prompted, then click “Get Library Book.”

9. Choose your Kindle device from the “Deliver to” menu.

10. Click “Get for Kindle”.

11. Your eBook will be delivered wirelessly the next time your Kindle connects to WiFi. To connect to WiFi, press “Menu” from the Home screen and select “Settings”, then select “View” next to WiFi Settings and select “Connect”.

OR

Downloading an eBook Via USB

Plug your Kindle into your computer   with a micro-USB cable. (The big end goes into the computer. The little end goes into the bottom of your Kindle.)

1. Follow steps 1-8 for wireless delivery.

2. You will be informed you need to transfer via USB. Hover your mouse over “My   Account” at the top of the screen and    select “Manage Your Kindle”.

3. Click the yellow “Actions” box to the right of the eBook you want.

4. Select the device you want to transfer the eBook to and click “Download”.

5. When the transfer is complete, unplug your Kindle and verify that the eBook is now in your Kindle library. Your eBook will return itself automatically after the lending period has ended.

 

Step 3
Returning an eBook Early

1. On your computer, go to http://www.amazon.com

2. Log into your account.

3. Hover your mouse over “My Account” at the top of the screen and select “Manage Your Kindle”.

4. Click the yellow “Actions” box to the right of the eBook you want to return.

5. Click “Return this book”.

6. When finished, click “Delete from Library” from “Actions” box.


Extra Troubleshooting

* If you get a message saying there has been an error with your library account, your library card may have expired or you may have overdue items. Please contact your local branch.

* If you have a free Kindle reader app and you can’t download your eBooks, double-check on Scenic Regional’s Digital Collections page that your eBook works on Kindles and free Kindle apps. Due to licensing restrictions, all Kindle eBooks are not available on free Kindle Apps.

* If your Kindle says it’s connected to  the internet and you still can’t get books, try disconnecting and then reconnecting to your wireless network. Make sure you are connecting to WiFi and not 3G or 4G. To check your network settings, go to Home, then Menu, then “Settings”. Select “View” next to “WiFi Settings” to view available networks. Choose “Connect” next to the network you want to connect to.

*If you’re having any trouble getting the eBook to show up, restart your Kindle by holding down the power button for a full 20 seconds, then let go.

Downloading eBooks to iPad

 

Step 1

Creating an Apple ID*

* If you already have an Apple ID, you may skip ahead to Step 2.

1. From the Home Screen, tap “Settings” and then tap “Store”.

2. Tap “Sign In”, or sign out if someone else's Apple ID is there already.

3. When a prompt appears, tap “Create New Apple ID”.

4. Choose the appropriate store by tapping “Store”, then select the country in which you are located. Tap “Done” to confirm your selection, then tap “Next” to proceed to the next screen.

5. The next screen will display the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions. You can opt to have the Terms and Conditions emailed to you for easier reading by tapping “Send by Email”. To do this, enter your valid email address and then tap “Send”.

6. To agree to the Terms and Conditions, tap the “Agree” button located in the bottom- right-hand of the page. Tap “Agree” again when the confirmation appears.

7. Once you've agreed to the terms and conditions, you'll need to enter an email address, password, choose security questions, and provide answers to them.

8. You can also enter an optional rescue email address.

9. The email address you provide will be your new Apple ID (which is what you will use to log in to the iTunes Store). Enter your email address and then tap Next.

10. Next, you’ll be required to enter your billing information. To change the default card type, tap the “Credit Card” field. Select your card type and tap “Done”. You will not be charged until you make a purchase.

11. Once you’ve filled out all the fields for your billing information, tap “Next”.

12. You’ll then see a screen that says “Verify Your Email Address”.

13. Tap “Done” and check your email for a verification email from Apple.

14. Open the email and tap the “Verify Now” link to activate your account.

15. You’ll be taken to a secure page to enter your Apple ID and password to complete your account verification.

16. Once you’ve entered your email address and password, tap “Verify Address”.

 

Step 2

Setting up Overdrive Media Console

1. On your iPad, select the App Store.

2. Type in “Overdrive Media Console”.

3. Download and install Overdrive Media Console.

4. From the Home Screen, tap “Overdrive Media Console”.

5. Tap “Get Books+”.

6. Register for an Adobe ID if prompted.

7. Search for “Scenic Regional Library”.

8. Select “Scenic Regional Library”.

9. Tap the empty star next to “Scenic Regional Library”. This is how Overdrive Media Console will remember your library preference.

 

Step 3

Downloading eBooks

1. On your iPad, open Overdrive Media Console.

2. Tap on “Get Books+” in the upper-right-hand corner.

3. Select “Scenic Regional Library”.

4. Search or browse for an eBook or audiobook until you find one you wish to check out.

5. Select “Add to Cart” next to Adobe EPUB. If you want to continue adding books, click “Continue Browsing” and repeat steps 4 and 5.

6. Tap “Proceed to Checkout”.

7. Select “Scenic Regional Library”.

8. Log in with your library card number and your last name.

9. Select lending period (7 or 14 days).

10. Tap “Confirm Check Out”.

11. Tap “Download”.

12. Enter Adobe ID if prompted.

13. You may now tap on your book to read it.

 

Step 4

Returning an eBook Early

1. On your iPad, open Overdrive MEdia Console.

2. Navigate to the book you wish to return.

3. Swipe your finger from left to right over the title.

4. Tap "Return and Delete".

5. If you accidentally delete an item, you can recover it by selecting "Get Books+" and choosing "Deleted Items" from the menu bar on the bottom of the screen.

 

Extra Troubleshooting

* In order to download the proper app, the operating system on your iPad must be at iOS version 4.2 or higher. To check your iOS, tap "Settings", then tap "General" and then "About". Halfway down the page, your current version will be listed. Connect your iPad to your computer using your USB cord and open iTunes. Once connected, your device will appear on the left-hand side of the iTunes screen. Select "Check for Update" and follow the directions.

Downloading eAudiobooks

 

Step 1

Downloading OverDrive Media Console

1. On your computer, go to http://www.scenicregional.org.

2. Click "eBooks and eAudiobooks" on the left-hand side.

3. A new page/tab will open. On the new page, click "Digital Software" on the left-hand side.

4. Click "OverDrive Media Console" on the right-hand side.

5. Click "Download OverDrive Media Console".

6. Click the radio button next to the operating system you have (Windows or Mac) and click “Download Now”.

7. Save and run the program.

8. Follow the steps in the set-up wizard.

 

Step 2

Downloading an eAudiobook

1. Go to www.scenicregional.orgon your computer.

2. Click "Log In" to log into your library account.

3. Click "Browse" or "Search" to find an eAudiobook you wish to check out.

4. Select “Add to Cart” next to the format you wish to check out. Please note that WMA formats are not compatible with all devices. To ensure compatibility, consider checking out the MP3 format, but be aware that MP3 files are larger and will take considerably more time to download.

5. Proceed to checkout. Select lending period and confirm checkout.

6. Click "Download".

7. Click "Open".

11. OverDrive Media Console will open.

12. It asks to create a new folder. Click  “OK”.

13. If your computer says, "The specified default download folder for new media does not exist. Do you want to create it?" then click "Yes”.

14. Choose the tracks you want to download and click "OK."

15. The bottom of OverDrive Media Console displays your download progress. This can take a while, so be patient.

16. When your download is complete, you may listen to your eAudiobook by double-clicking the title.

17. If you want to transfer your audiobook to another device (like an MP3 player or your phone), connect your device (MP3 player, phone, etc) to the computer with a USB cable.

18. Right-click the eAudiobook you want to transfer and select "Transfer".

19. OverDrive Media Console will launch a transfer wizard. Follow its instructions and enjoy your new eAudiobook!

 

Extra Troubleshooting

* If you get an error message on step 13 of downloading the Audiobook, try clicking "Browse" and choosing a different folder, like the desktop or another area you know for sure you can save to.

* If you’re using Windows and your copy of  Windows Media Player is out of date, you will need to upgrade. To upgrade, open OverDrive Media Console, select “Tools” from the menu, and click “Windows Media Player Security Upgrade”. Follow the steps to complete the upgrade.

* If you downloaded an audiobook in WMA format and it won’t play, try downloading an audiobook in MP3 format. Not all devices and programs support WMA formats, but MP3 formats are accepted by almost everything.

* If you receive an error stating OverDrive Media Console could not connect to the internet, make sure OverDrive Media Console is listed as an exception in  your Windows Firewall.
