Crowns of Thorns and Glory: Mary Todd Lincoln and Varina Howell Davis: The Two First Ladies of the Civil War
General Reviews

As the country commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, this is a good time to read more about it!

Mary Todd Lincoln has had many stories told about her. Some are true and some aren't. The woman married to the President of the Confederate States of America is not much spoken of or well known.  Van der Heuvel's book tells the story of two women who never met but who loved and served beside two men facing staggeringly difficult tasks. Mary and Varina were exceptional women in their own right and the information engagingly presented in this book makes the reader feel she knew them personally.
